Yankee Pinstripe Report May

The first 61 games are in the books and the Yankees are. The team is so much fun to watch. Here we will give out pinstripes for the players for May. The good bad and overall analysis. In case you are new here, check out last month’s Pinstripe Report (The Yankees Pinstripes Report: April) these are the rules:

Every month each player can get up to a maximum of 5 pinstripes per month. You cannot lose pinstripes. The maximum number of pinstripes is 27 (27 rings make sense). The more pinstripes you have towards the end of the season. The better overall player you are. Here are my rankings of # of pinstripes in means for each category:

(Don’t take this into account now as the season just started)

  • 0-4; You are trash and shouldn’t be in the league anymore
  • 5-9; You had your moments but you were MID
  • 10-14; You were a good player borderline All-Star
  • 15-19; You are an All-Star and considered a top player on the team
  • 20-25; You are a Superstar
  • 26-27; MVP and you are a Certified Yankee

Exceptions-

Injuries (depending on the length of the injury I’ll give some slack)

Trades (Whether you were traded or traded away I will inflate to whatever # pinstripes you had)

Rookies (Rookies will get a little of a pass but not much)

Players who received 5 Pinstripes

Luis Gil- Total Pinstripes (6)

Oh my goodness Luis Gil has been absolutely fantastic. If you had told me Luis Gil would have a 1.99 ERA in 11 starts, I wouldn’t believe you. He is on pace to win ROY and Cy Young if he keeps this up. This guy is incredible. The fact I gave him 1 last month is crazy.

Aaron Judge – Total Pinstripes (7)

Never in doubt. I always knew Judge would come back to form. To all the people who thought Judge was washed well, last time checked he leads the league in HR and OPS. Aaron Judge is gonna win his 3rd MVP (2017 is his) and I’m here for it. We are watching a generational talent.

Juan Soto – Total Pinstripes (10)

What else can you say about Soto that hasn’t been said? He continues to be a must-have player forever.

Players who received 4 Pinstripes

Anthony Volpe- Total Pinstripes (7)

Brother literally had a hit in almost every game in May. A 21-game hitting streak is not common for a 23-year-old. He had cemented himself as a great leadoff hitter.

Clark Schmidt – Total Pinstripes (6)

It sucks he’s injured because he had a very strong May. A 2.52 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP is an All-Star candidate. Probably won’t see him till at least the All-Star break at the earliest.

Marcus Stroman – Total Pinstripes (6)

He has a strong case for an All-Star selection. So far, he has a 2.73 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.

Carlos Rodon – Total Pinstripes (7)

So far, he is the AL comeback player of the year. It seems like at every start he gets stronger and stronger.

Players who received 3 Pinstripes

Giancarlo Stanton – Total Pinstripes (5)

There’s a lot of hate for Stanton. Yes, his cold streaks are horrible, and he is just a guess hitter, but when his HRs nukes are so much fun to watch. He’s on pace for 30-35 HR and you take that easily.

Alex Verdugo – Total Pinstripes (6)

Finally, a left fielder who can catch and playfield the right way. Also, his bat has been really solid so far.

Luke Weaver – Total Pinstripes (3)

Shoutout to Luke. He’s becoming a reliable pitcher in the bullpen. He’s also such a likable guy to root for.

Jose Trevino – Total Pinstripes(5)

Not gonna lie. Trevino is surprising me with his bat. Did not expect him to .262 with a 721 OPS which is pretty good for catching standards. Could be another potential All-Star

Clay Holmes – Total Pinstripes(6)

I’m sorry I’m not a Clay Holmes guy. I just have a bad feeling that he’ll blow up in the playoffs like Aroldis Chapman. However, numbers are pretty good, but the eye test gives me anxiety.

Players who received 2 Pinstripes

Austin Wells – Total Pinstripes(3)

I’m not gonna hate on Wells. He’s just getting unlucky hits. His defense has been great.

Oswaldo Cabrera – Total Pinstripes(5)

That’s the Waldo I know. Fallen back to earth after that hot start. But it’s all good though.

Nestor Cortes – Total Pinstripes(2)

Stop giving up meatballs Nestor. Other than that you’re probably going to the bullpen.

Players who received 1 Pinstripes

Gleyber Torres – Total Pinstripes(2)

What an awful season Gleyber is having. The hitting is slowly creeping back up but I’m sick and tired of the defensive mistakes he’s made. If this continues, he either goes to the bench or if anyone is willing to have him go for it.

Anthony Rizzo Total Pinstripes(3)

My rule is that if you hit a walk-off that’s an automatic pinstripe, but man Rizzo is awful this season. The errors are starting to be concerning and the hitting is just barely there. I’m still not giving up on Rizzo but with that concussion from last year, you start to wonder if it’s post-concussion syndrome.

Overall Thoughts for May

The Yankees has been so much fun to watch. Aside from a few nitpicks, it feels like, after all these years, we finally got a squad. It’s still early to tell but as of right now, the Yankees have a shot to finally win ring number 28. Later this month we’ll look into top trade targets the Yankees should go for at the trade deadline as well as the pinstripes report for June at the end of the month.
